Flag of Elysia
A Color Theory Exploration of National Identity & Symbolic Paradise

Project Overview
Challenge
Create a flag for a fictional tropical country that communicates national identity, geographic essence, and aspirational values using two principles of color theory. The flag needed to function at various scales and across merchandise applications, while maintaining conceptual clarity and strong symbolic meaning.
Concept
Elysia is a fictional island nation envisioned as a sun-soaked cultural paradise, rooted in peace, sustainability, and collective harmony. This project reimagined flag design not as a mere identifier, but as a symbolic vessel—a distillation of cultural story and emotional geography.
Color Theory Focus
Split Complementary Harmony for visual contrast and tropical vibrancy, combined with Simultaneous Contrast to emphasize emotional warmth and balance between hues.
✶ Recognition
Selected for exhibition at the Mary and Jeff Bell Library, Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi, showcasing how flag design can function as a form of cultural storytelling and visual diplomacy.
Design Strategy
Color theory principles and cultural storytelling
Color Theory Implementation
- Split Complementary Harmony — For visual contrast and tropical vibrancy that captures the island's natural beauty
- Simultaneous Contrast — To emphasize emotional warmth and balance between hues, creating visual energy
- Color Psychology — Red for protection and sovereignty, green for prosperity and nature
Symbolic Structure
- Tripartite Horizontal Layout — Visually divides the flag into past, present, and future, symbolizing continuity and balance
- Central Sunburst — Unifying emblem of hope, unity, and forward momentum reflecting solar warmth
- Gouache Execution — Hand-painted initial renderings to explore organic texture and pigment blending
Final Outcome
A flag embodying paradise through color theory

Design Resolution
A flag that successfully captures the essence of a tropical paradise through strategic color theory application. The design demonstrates how color relationships can embody cultural aspirations while maintaining the practical requirements of effective flag design.
Symbolic Elements:
- Red Field — Signifies protection, sovereignty, and the strength of the people
- Green Field — Represents agricultural richness, prosperity, and natural abundance
- Radiant Central Sunburst — A unifying emblem of hope, unity, and forward momentum
- Tripartite Layout — Embodies temporal and cultural balance across generations
The flag reflects Elysia's vision as a sun-soaked cultural paradise where life flourishes in balance with nature, guided by principles of peace, sustainability, and collective harmony.
Results & Reflection
Cultural narrative through color theory
Project Impact
This project demonstrated how color theory can be applied beyond technical exercise to become a tool for cultural storytelling. I learned to balance academic color principles with emotional and symbolic meaning, creating a flag that functions both as a design study and as a believable national symbol.
Elysia's cultural identity was crafted through research into real-world tropical flags, color psychology, and symbolism, resulting in a cohesive identity that draws from geographic beauty and aspirational values.
What I Gained
- Applied color theory in cultural context — using split complementary harmony and simultaneous contrast meaningfully
- Symbolic design thinking — distilling complex cultural narratives into visual elements
- Traditional media integration — using gouache to inform digital design with authentic texture
- Cultural research methodology — building believable fictional identities through real-world study
Design Philosophy:
Every element was chosen to reflect life in balance with nature and a vision for a flourishing, sunlit future. The flag demonstrates how design can embody aspirational values while remaining grounded in cultural authenticity and color theory principles.
