Grunge Movement
Concept
This concert poster celebrates Riot Grrrl and feminist rock through the lens of 1990s grunge design. The goal was to capture the movement's DIY ethos, raw energy, and anti-establishment attitude while honoring Hole's cultural impact and Courtney Love's confrontational stage presence.
Design Approach
The design embraces grunge's signature distressed aesthetic: photocopied textures, hand-drawn elements, and intentionally degraded typography. Layered text collides at chaotic angles, evoking zine culture and underground music flyers. The color palette is limited to harsh blacks, whites, and muted tones, with high-contrast imagery that feels raw and unpolished. Torn edges, scratches, and noise textures reference analog reproduction methods and the rejection of commercial polish. The composition intentionally breaks grid structure, celebrating imperfection and spontaneity.
Result
The poster authentically channels grunge's rebellious spirit while functioning as effective promotional design. The aggressive visual language reflects the music's intensity, demonstrating how distressed aesthetics can communicate energy, attitude, and cultural identity in ways that clean design cannot.
